God's Joy

Last week’s performance of Jennifer Hudson on American Idol was mind-blowing. I did not know she could deliver a song with such power and raw emotion. For me the best line of her song of “Where You At” is when she sings “And I stood there... in the freezing cold! And I waited for you, but you never showed.”

It gave me a deep realization that when all is said and done, we will all come to experience that feeling of abandonment. But at the same time---when we place God first, He will never abandon us. I am so happy also because last Saturday I felt an overwhelming rush of warm emotions cursing through my body. My wife, our daughter and I went for a 3D ultrasound of our second child. Seeing our baby’s tender face made everything worthwhile. I am elated with love and awe. God has always been so good to me. I told my wife the other day---I am the most blessed man in the world--to have you, our daughter and now our boy. Thank you God for all the blessings. Through all the trials and tribulations we’ve endured we can’t wait to see the birth of our newest baby.

Orlando Family Vacation to Seaworld Part 2: Tips and Tricks

In the first part of our family vacation which you can read here, I expounded on our experience what we went through in getting ready to come to Florida.  But just not Florida.  This was Orlando, Florida!  Our destination was to visit SeaWorld and see the Shamu/Orca show.

Before flying, I went online to purchase our tickets.  I bought the entry tickets with the All Day Dining Deal promo.  For $99 per person we could eat all day within an hour.  I thought it was a scam, but it was not.  It was very true and I think it is a very worthwhile investment.  Below are some of my other tips if you are planning to travel with your family.

ARRIVAL AT SEAWORLD

First thing we noticed when we drove to SeaWorld in our rental car is that the entrance was hard to find.  So please follow your directions very carefully.  If you enter the wrong way you may get your tires puncture.  Look for the signs that read, "Do not enter".  If they read that, please adhere to their warning. Once you find the main entrance standard parking is $25 dollars.

You can bring water to the park.  You may even bring a small cooler.  Other parks discourage you from bringing anything to drink.  Not SeaWorld.  And it is a very good idea because summer time is very hot.  Water and drinks are very expensive.  The first day we did not bring our own water.  The second day we did.  Also come dressed for the occasion.  I took regular jeans and closed toe shoes.  It was a very bad idea.  After 20 minutes of walking I could feel my feet sweating profusely and my tenders felt like they were gasping for air.  The park is actually very large.  In less than ten minutes my children were complaining of getting tired. So I rented a stroller for $25 bucks and I pushed them all through the park.  They also rent motorized chairs for $50 dollars each I believe.  But I can't quite remember.  These are good for overweight people or those that may be handicapped.

As soon as we got to the park we went to eat.  Take a map of the park.  Sit down and plan how you will explore it.  Here is a list of the restaurants that currently serve food for the all day meals promotion.  (Some of the other restaurants in SeaWorld do not.)

We first ate at the Seafire Grill and then we ate at the Expedition Cafe.  When we went to the Expedition Cafe I noticed that just for that meal it totaled over $68 dollars for the four of us.  So it was worth it. The food was also very good and tasted fresh.  The deserts were also very awesome!

SHOWS AND EXHIBITIONS

We did not do any rides.  But they looked like fun and scary.  We did not do the rides because my eight year old was afraid, and I don't like to be frightened.  All the shows and exhibits are included.  Except for some.  So please check the SeaWorld Website for more information.  Here is a list of the places we visited---

Dolphin Encounter---I bought our tickets online and had them emailed to me.  Before we went to the show we had to redeem the voucher at the information desk.  This was the second most fun activity we did.  For about 15 minutes the trainers talk to us about the dolphins and what they do.  Expect to touch them, get wet and take a picture with them.  For $25 bucks you can take the photo with you.  We also had a chance to feed them.  We paid $35 dollars each for the experience.  This is the least expensive of the dolphin encounters.  If you want to swim with a dolphin you have to pay $200 dollars per person.  Something that we did not do.

Feed the Sharks--For $10 dollars you get the chance to throw fish at sharks and see if they feed on them.  They actually don't.  Most of the 15 fish my kids threw were eaten by the fish.  The sharks in the pool were not too hungry.  But my kids enjoyed throwing food at the fish even if the sharks did not eat any.

One Ocean---We are so glad SeaWorld Orlando still has the orcas show.  I don't agree with everything PETA does.  SeaWorld does a lot of good.  They have improved the care of the big whales so much.  The first day we went, they cancelled the show because of inclement weather.  My son was very sad.  This was the whole reason why we came to Orlando.  But the next day we returned to see if we could get back in.  Apparently when a dolphin or orca show is cancelled you can get a rain pass.  But you must request it the same day, otherwise you take a chance of not getting in.  Thankfully my wife spoke to the manager and he gave us passes to watch the show the next day.  Both the dolphin show and killer whale show are free with the purchase of a single day ticket.  Just get there early to beat the crowds and get a good seat.  Also expect to get wet!!

Overall our experience was a pleasant one.  If we ever go back we will go either in the spring, fall or winter.  Hopefully by doing that there will be less crowds and there will be less oppressive heat.  If we do go back we will take umbrellas or rain ponchos.  The weather is unpredictable.  It may be sunny in the morning, but in the afternoon there may be a shower or two.

Our Orlando Family Vacation Part 1

We have returned from out three nights, four days family vacation to Orlando, Florida.  It was quite an experience to say the least.

AVOIDING THE TIMESHARE SCAM

In this first part I will describe what happened to us and what we did to overcome some obstacles.  One of the first obstacles was that when I first made reservations with the Holiday Inn Resorts Hotel, I did not know they were part of a grand scheme dealing with timeshares.  Be very careful about "resorts" or hotels that do that. If you are not careful they will sweet talk you into signing a long term agreement that you will not be able to get out.  They first lure you in with a very low price hotel stay.  They quoted me for $250.  And then they told me that the money would be returned to me in cash if I went to one of their presentations to their resorts. Then they sugared it up by upgrading my stay by giving me two free tickets to Seaworld.  Seaworld was our destination anyway because our son loves sea life and whales.  It was too good to be true.  The scheme unraveled when I asked them if they would be picking me up to go to their resort.  They told me that they would not. (Although they led me to believe that they would.)  This is when the first red flag popped up.

I was upset when they told me that so I did some research.  I found out that timeshare sellers do that to unwary vacationers.  I read so many horror stories where participants are kept in their presentations for up to four hours, until they are convinced to signup. They told me it would only take two hours.  But reading these accounts made me call them and cancel my reservation with them.  They returned part of my money but not all of it.  No way would I loose four hours of vacation time and drag my wife and two kids into this.  So we made another reservation with another hotel.  I thought I would be free from these type of schemers but I was not.  Stay tuned to find out what happened with our second hotel.

GOING TO THE AIRPORT

Since this was our first trip outside of our beloved city of Chicago I had no clue how we were going to get to the airport.  So I found out that the easiest way would be to rent short term parking with a hotel that offered free shuttles.  And that is is what we did.  It was very convenient.  For four days I spent around 60 bucks.  My car would be parked in the hotel parking lot and when we got back from our trip, we would drive back home.  This was more sensible for us than getting an Uber or Lyft car.

ARRIVAL IN ORLANDO AND MAIN HOTEL STAY

The flight from Chicago to Orlando was a little less that two hours and twenty minutes.  Before our trip, I was actually thinking of driving to Florida.  But my brother, who had driven to Florida before discouraged me.  He told me that it took him a total of 18 hours to get there.  And he also told me that it is very scary to drive up the mountains.  So we took a flight instead.  When we arrived in Florida we opted to rent a car.  I am glad we did because although the Westpark Hotel granted us free shuttles to Seaworld, when we got there, they told us that we had to book it one day in advanced.  Having our own car meant we did not have to depend on them.  We were free to roam Florida any time we wanted.

However, when we got to check-in to the Westpark Hotel, to my utter disgust, this hotel was also a timeshare establishment.  I think that a lot of hotels in Florida are like that.  As soon as we checked in the clerk steered me into another front desk.  The person in this other desk smiled politely, but she had the look of a shark.  She told me she wanted to give me an unsolicited package and a free breakfast for the following morning.  Second red flag!!  The look of my face changed.  And they all noticed I was pissed!  I told them, "NO!"  I was not interested.  Then that same lady said, "We have other free giveaways to give you if you come to our resort presentations."  I was still more pissed and repeated myself to her. Suddenly, what appeared to be the security guard and a third front desk person, slipped a singled sheet agreement for me to sign.  I read the form but I screamed and told them I would not sign it because they had not asked me to sign it at the end of my check-in.  This was another of their ploys to have them call me and bother me with the buying of a timeshare during my stay.  But I returned their paper and took my luggage to our room.  I do want to say that as far as I know the Holiday Inn Resort Hotel and the Westpark are not related.  However, like I said previously, I believe many hotels in Florida operate this way.  So please be aware!  Once this ordeal ended we were free to begin our vacation. 

We Are Heading to Florida!

If you are like us and most families across the United States, going on a long trip vacation is kinda hard.

Things can be expensive and logistics can be a nightmare.   Do you take an airplane or road trip?  Once you get there what kind of hotel do you book?

We have pretty much done staycations. Meaning we tend not to go far.  The last few summers we have been too the Mall of America and Wisconsin Dells, which are locations close to Chicago, IL where we live. However, this time we were able to book a cheap hotel in Orlando, Florida, and I believe we are taking them family to Sea World.  My youngest loves sea animals and he has been dying to see the orcas.  So today I will make the preparations for us to undertake that trip.  We are all excited and we post a second update soon.

Here is what I am talking about.  I had to revise the original video because YouTube felt it did not comply to its policies to appease advertisers.  There was nothing bad about the video, other than a reference I made about my sister having such a hard time getting them.  She was "sick to death" (had the flu) and she drove to the house to drop them off to my daughter.  YouTube's algorithm does not recognize figurative language.  Yet they allow true trash like Logan Paul to continue to trend on their platform.  YouTube bans videos of cute animals but they allow real trash to make money for them!  I'm sorry. Our channel showcase my kids' activities.  Innocent fun.  I guess I am a little upset.  Anyways.  I do hope you enjoy this revised version.  And please continue to subscribe and share.  We have until February 20, 2018 to get 1,000 subscribers.  Thank you.

My second grade students recently did research on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for African-American History Month.  The online education program we used was pebblego.com.  For students from kindergarten and 2nd grade this is a good resource.  Students can have access to different biographies and read articles about famous historical figures.  They can also have a chance to watch videos. When watching one of these videos we came across some footage featuring.

I was surprised to see this because I did not know there was a movie about him working in his lab. The site has its limitations, but for basic research where students can get basic facts about the the person or topics, it is very good.  Other African-American biographies suitable for children in this age group are:

Hungry Like a Bug

After we read one of Eric Carle's most famous books I did this lesson with the kindergarten through 1st grade students.

There are a number of variations of this lesson.  But pretty much it goes like this: I bought a box of bow ties, shells and spiral pasta. I bought pinto beans because the store was out of the white ones. I also bought round paper plates.  At the school we had the glue and I pre-cut the leaves.  I also printed the labels for each of the stages of the butterfly. Here is what I discovered.  The kindergarten students will have a harder time to do this project.  They have a hard time placing the labels with the right step.  The first graders had no problem at all.  The best part is that they all loved their work.  It was hard for me because I teach four kindergarten and four first grade classes.  But in the end it was all worth it.  The students really enjoyed doing this. Icky Earthworm Fascinates Baby

This is my son. One day some friends of ours invited us to Lake Geneva, IL and we went fishing.  He was fascinated about the fish we were catching at the pier.  Later when we left he kept telling us that he wanted to go fishing.  Since we live close to Lake Michigan it was a no-brainer.  We went to the fishing store and bought a rod and worms.  Well, since he knew that there were worms in the tub he kept insisting to see them.  I took out a worm and was surprised to see how large it was.  I thought, "this isn't a worm it is a snake!" Babies are fascinated about icky stuff that adults may find revolting.  Here my son is studying an earthworm for the first time.  His expressions and wonder are revealing. Dinosaur Fossil on Mars

Since I was about 12 years old I have been fascinated by the planet Mars.  At that age I would visit the Albany Park Library and read all the books about the Red Planet to learn more about if it harbored any life. I believe that the NASA Curiosity rover has been finding earth shattering evidence that life indeed was present or that life in some form of another is still present there today.  But they are not telling us---officially.  Case in point is this awesome photograph I found on their website.

NASA describes this photograph as being mineral vein deposits which sit on Mount Sharp.  NASA also describes the protruding minerals as not being more than 2.5 inches from the "host rock".  To me this picture which was posted on April 2, 2015 looks more like the skeleton of a fossilized dinosaur or reptilian creature.  Growing up I also read a lot of books on dinosaurs and fossils.  Being a Christian did not deter me at all about trying to be a young scientist.  As a matter of fact, it fascinated me even more to learn about God's creations.

Getting back to the photo---I can clearly see a head at the lower right side.  The head is followed by a long neck, which then expands to what appears to be a rib cage and appendages.  Towards the very end moving to the left, at least to me, it looks what appears to be a tail.  I might also add that NASA found this little piece of evidence in "Garden City."  Garden City?  Hmmm.  There might be other things they might have found but like I said before that they are not telling us. It would be great if we had a true palentologist analyze these mineral deposits and see what they conclude.  Or what do you think?  are these just minerals, or is it a fossilized skeleton of a dinosaur?

Fish Port of General Santos

Heads up people.  A couple of days ago I received notification from YouTube that the National Hockey League was claiming the rights to a video I created and narrated years ago.  I was very surprised they wanted to do that because the video has absolutely nothing to do with the NHL or hockey. Of all things it is a video about tuna fishing in the Philippines, and as far as I know no one likes hockey in the Philippines. I contested the claim and apparently they backed off.  Thank God.  I still do not know why they did that.  But this has been a very good lesson for me...Stand your ground and truth will always prevail.

The Bible Tract

Dear Brother/Sister,

Thank you for visiting this blog. The bible tract you hold in your hands is no coincidence. God has reached out to you to offer you comfort and peace. God does not want you to continue to suffer and live a life with guilt and doubt.  God wants to rescue you from where you are at, to offer you eternal life through Jesus Christ---His Son.  God also wants to set you FREE because you are HIS child and because His love for you has no limit.  Please pray that God continues to minister to you.  SEEK his Word.  MEDITATE it day and night.  Repent of your sins. ACCEPT Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and pray this prayer:  Lord Jesus Christ.  Come into my heart. Forgive me for all of my sins. Become MY Lord and Savior!  Amen.

After you do this please find a bible believing church in your area.  Know and believe that God has forgiving you and you are saved. He will be with you all the days of your life.

Mission Accomplished!

With layovers, our trip to General Santos took a total of 25 hours. 

My wife and I had been talking about visiting her family in the Philippines for sometime.  The last time we visited her country was four years ago.  General Santos City is 8522 miles away from Chicago. For this trip we also wanted to impact more people by sharing the Christian gospel with them.  After much prayer and contemplation as to which method would be the best, God answered our prayers with a very doable plan.  The plan would be to make rice packages, pass them out to the poor, and include several bible tracts in the Hiligaynon language, which is one of the main language spoken in Southern Philippines.

In preparation we bought a 50 kilo sack of rice, 100 food grade bags, and noodles.  On August 5^th we went ahead to Yusaville and Lanton to deliver 70 gospel rice packages.  The content of each bag had two cups of rice, noodles, and two bible tracts from the World Missionary Press.  To do this successfully we enlisted the help of our family.  Our daughter and niece helped us prepare the packages and kuya Bobby, who is also my brother-in-law, helped us deliver the goods.

We first rode to Yusaville in Bobby’s tricycle.  Bobby did all the talking because unfortunately, as was the case in Manila, I do not speak the language.  As we rode through the dirt road you could see the small homes made out of palm leaves and bamboo.  Most homes do not even have a livable area of 8X8 square feet.  I thought that we were going to be searching for people to pass the food out, but we didn't   As soon as one person took the food, people started coming out of their homes to get one.  How did they know?  I suspect that many were watching us from inside their homes---when they saw that it was good, as the Good News is, they sprung out!

As the people received a bag they expressed great gratitude.  They all had a very big smile on their face.  When the rest of the family members heard the excitement they too came out to see what was happening. They would look at me and say “salamat.”  Others said “thank you” directly as they found out I was from Chicago.  Bobby told me, “They are very poor, they have no food and job.  This little rice is a big help for them.”

At Lanton, the reception was even greater.  We were going to recruit two other people to help us.  But we didn't need to because as soon the residents heard we were given away some rice with bible tracts they came to us in droves.  Uncle Sadam, whom we met in front of his house, cheerfully repeated to the gathering crowd that the donations were a “Christian service.”  The people told us that they were looking forward to reading the Word of God.

Lastly, we had four remaining bags of rice. I asked Bobby to drive us to a small house church around the corner of Chico St. called the “House of the Lord”.  There we met a young pastor named Nasar.  He told us that our visit was unexpected, but greatly appreciated. I gave him the remaining rice, bible tracts as well as my contact information.  He told me that during their prayer meeting on Wednesday he would ask the church members to pray for our family’s safe return to Chicago. When he said that it really touched my heart.

This trip was very affirming. The Philippines is a very beautiful country with equally beautiful people. Filipinos are friendly and kind.  They are also very helpful--quick to accept you with a smile. Despite some hardships the country has been experiencing for many years, it has not change their heart. In America for example, people tend to be bitter about their circumstances rather than be thankful to God. I have never seen a Filipino being spiteful or mean. They are also open minded and not critical. This is key for accepting  the Lord. (When I gave a bible tract to a senior citizen, Juanine, she grabbed it and kissed it.)  Filipinos are looking for hope that only God can give.

There are so many people to thank for helping us on this project---but we would like to especially thank World Missionary Press for the donation of literature. Thank you pastor. To use a very popular phrase often used here in the Philippines, “to God be the glory.”

Planting Seeds in Manila

On July 9th, with our two children en-towed we finally departed for the Philippines.  Our trip is serving a double purpose.  My wife is visiting her aging parents and we also thought we can do some work for the Lord in bringing more people to Christ and live up to our obligation of the Great Commission.  Thanks to the great folks at World Missionary Press we packed several hundreds tracts in the three main languages of the Philippines---Tagalog, Cebuano and Illonggo.  When we got to Manila I did not know how to get the first part of the work done.  I prayed in my heart for guidance and God answered my prayers in the form of my wife's young niece, Cherry Ann.

As we were unpacking our luggage Ann-Ann, as she is affectionately known, saw the tracts and asked my wife what they were.  She was surprised to know that I was very religious---which in fact I am not.  I'd like to consider myself more spiritual than religious, but that was beside the point. I took the opportunity to ask her if she would be willing to help me pass out the tracts and she happily obliged.  But first we had to come up with a plan.  The plan was that as my wife stayed in the hotel taking care of our two children, Ann-Ann and I would walk the streets of Manila and give the bible tracts to the people.  I was told to keep quiet, and let her do all the talking.  My task was to walk right next to her and keep watch for signs of trouble. What transpired was eye-opening.

Our first distribution was on the 10th.  We took 25 samples and walked about two blocks.  Ann-Ann was a natural.  With her kind voice she asked the people in the street if they wanted to read what she was passing out.  We ran out of the 25 booklets in less than a five minutes!  I could not believe how fast the people willingly took the tracts. Some people even called us from across the street wanting to see what we were passing out.

On the 13th of July we would try it again.  This time we would try to pass all of the remaining Tagalog tracts. Again I was a bit nervous because I did not know how the overall population would react.  Now, I need to clarify that Manila is a very large city that has many homeless people living in the streets.  The things I got to see where totally heartbreaking.  I saw mothers sleeping on the streets with their babies---one child had no eye.  I will never forget this. Others are living in cardboard boxes.  While others are living in their cars.  All the while gray water is running in streams along the city curbs.  The sights and smells are very vivid to say the least.  There are also many ran shacked buildings  were the homeless have taken up residence.  And mind you, this is in a major metropolitan city.

On our second day, we started slow.  In the beginning, the first few people we approached did not want to take the booklets.  But as soon as we crossed the street, people started to take them again.  One by one people readily accepted the word of God.  Many of the people said thank you.  Others that were sitting by the curb, quickly leafed through them wanting to read about how God could help them.  One man that was sitting read the title of the booklet and shouted out to us in Tagalog "Thank you for saving me!"  Another woman that was going to work and stopped to buy a street snack, took a booklet from Ann-Ann, read what it was and turned around to ask me for another one!  As they spoke I asked Ann-Ann to translated for me what they were saying. What did I realized in this venture?  That people are hungry for the word of God. People are looking for hope.  Who else can give them that hope?  Jesus Christ no one else.  On July 14th we are slated to go to General Santos---the heart of Mindanao.  Once we get to this city we will once again distribute more booklets to the people.  Once we start and finish our short term mission I will post how it went.  Please pray for us, the safety our family and that we are successful in sharing the word of God.

Exercising for the Lord

NO, the picture above is not me.  But it is someone I aspire to be--fit and healthy.  Today marks my third week of exercise, non-stop, for at least three to four times a week.  Two months ago when I went to my doctor, she told me I had slightly high cholesterol.  I was shocked to say the least.  No wonder I was feeling weird.  I had stopped exercising for more than a year because I went through bilateral hernia surgery.  I was afraid of ripping my insides again.  But a year is long enough.  I came to weigh 169 pounds.  I am down to 160 and I hope to drop a few more pounds.  But today, I felt a little bit tired.  I did not want to exercise.  But then I thought of the following Bible verse which motivated me to get up and finish the week:

 

"In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will direct thy paths."

Proverbs 3:6

 

I hope to continue to workout, putting God first in my plans so they will succeed.  I have eight more weeks to go...I'll keep you posted.

Spreading the Gospel

The other day, my big sister gave me a bunch of bible tracts to pass out in my neighborhood.  And I did.  I walked several miles putting them in parks, windows, door bells and cars.  I got such a nice satisfaction doing so.  And on top of that I was walking a lot.  Which is good exercise.  I know right now it is cold, but I can't wait for Spring when more people are walking our park and more will be able to pick up the seeds.  I was also moved to know that there is an organization that can send you hundreds of tracts for FREE!  There is no excuse for not spreading the Gospel.  All you need is time and a willing to go sowing....

Tim Tebow: Standing Up for Christ!

Tim Tebow is doing something that most Christians are afraid to do---to publicly stand up for God. When Tebow was born I was entering high school. 24 years later...God has created a phenom no one was expecting. Tebow's life story is quite amazing...his mother got sick while pregnant in the Philippines and she refused to abort him. Years later God has shown how he rewards the faithful. Every time he does something amazing on the football field, Tebow kneels down with one knee and prays. He is not afraid of being ridicule or criticized. He has said to public outlets that his expression of faith is part of his way of life. His "Tebowing' is going global. I pray that God may continue to use this young man for his glory and that he may protect his steps wherever he goes. This old geezer is being inspired by a new modern day hero. Thank you for teaching me not to be ashamed. I pray to God that I too can find the courage to stand up for God.
